The Society Presents: Collecting Contemporary Art

March 19, 2011

On March 29, Culturites gathered at the sleek Angell Gallery to participate in a lively panel discussion. Led by OCAD associate professor & curator Charles Reeve, the discussion revolved around contemporary art and how to start your very own collection.

Members of The Society were given useful tips from a couple of individual collectors – Ken Zuckerman and Ken Montague. Each have amassed their own impressive private collections, but both also stressed that collecting art can be as high or low brow as one wants. In fact, Ken Zuckerman got his start by collecting Swatch watches!

Rounding out the evening’s panelists were Marla Wasser, president of one of Canada’s leading art advisories, and Jamie Angell, our incredible co-host and owner of one of Toronto’s most influential galleries.

As the discussion came to a close, members were still sipping on their delicious ABSOLUT cocktails and buzzing about the prospect of starting their own collection. This was definitely a fantastic way to kick start the inaugural launch of The Society’s three-part art series!

“It was so interesting to hear these art-world veterans try to put into words that je-ne-sais-quoi that goes into starting an art collection. They really did a great job of making their advice approachable and dare we say…..fun” — Ashleigh Dempster & Amanda Blakley
